Migrant Instability

2023 | Migrant Instability @ Mai | Montréal, arts interculturels

Migrant Instability is a duo exhibition that questions what one carries and/or what one leaves behind when they “move”. The presented works attempt to create a dialogue between the violently transformative experiences of a first-generation immigrant (Jin) and the constant state of displacement a second-generation immigrant (Park) experiences throughout their life. For Jin and Park, the heightened hostility against Asian bodies during the pandemic has also heightened the physical and spiritual disconnection from diasporic homelands.

In Jin’s mynameisyours, personal writings and cell phone footage constitute a reflection upon his positioning within his city while simultaneously and ceaselessly staying on the move to survive — in many senses of the word.

Park’s In Place of Your Name, captures the artist’s failed attempt at finding his aunt’s grave, based on his father’s oldest memory; going up a mountain at night to bury his one-year-old sister’s corpse with his own father. The exhibition also presents their collaborative works under the title, Take Us Somewhere, which are composed of video, object-based installation, and writings.
